Living on a peninsula in western Carteret County, the residents of Cedar Point understand the importance of keeping our coastal waters clean and productive. We also know that what we do in our small town can have a great effect on the water that surrounds us.
That’s why to Cedar Point officials and residents improve water quality in the White Oak River is a top priority.
As part of that commitment, the town received a federal grant in 2010 for a two-year project to reduce the amount of polluted runoff that enters the river and is responsible closing shellfish beds. A federal study that the town took part in found that stormwater runoff is now the major source of water pollution in the White Oak.
It response to that study, Cedar Point applied for and received the federal grant to fund a three-pronged approach:
• Community outreach and education
• Inexpensive techniques to reduce stormwater from existing development, including a “green” redesign of Town Hall and
• A model stormwater ordinance to encourage low-impact development (LID) practices for new development.
