Hurricane Preparedness

In the event of a hazardous storm event this webpage will be used as a means of providing important town notices as often as necessary to alert our residents, property owners, and business owners of the latest storm developments as they occur.

Before the Hurricane:

Create or replenish Disaster Supplies Kit.

Gather supplies so your family can endure an evacuation or home confinement. The basic kit should include tools, emergency supplies and a first aid kit. Store these items in a large trash can with a lid, plastic storage containers or coolers. The containers should be easy to carry in the event of evacuation. See below a suggested check list for tools and emergency supplies. Make your own list!

When a Watch is Issued:

Monitor radio and TV broadcast for information regarding the storms progress.
Service and fuel up automobiles.
Refill prescriptions for your family and pets ensuring at least a 2-week supply.
Clear yard and deck of all potential flying debris.
Anchor materials which cannot be brought inside.
Prepare to cover windows and doors.
Check food and water supplies.
Replenish as necessary.
Get cash since ATM’s and banks may not be operating following the storm.
Check generator and fuel supplies.
Check additional tanks for gas grill. Buy ice.

When Evacuation is Ordered:

Inform a family member of your plans.
Turn off the water at the main valve at the street and electricity at the main switch or fuse.
Take warm protective clothing, sleeping bags, blankets and your disaster supplies kit.
Lock up your house.
Take your re-entry permit, valuable papers and prescriptions and leave immediately.

After the Storm:

Be careful! Emergency services (fire, police and medical emergency) may not be available or severely restricted.

Medically Fragile Resident Registration

Medically Fragile Registration

Carteret County Department of Emergency Services officials may order or recommend an evacuation of specific areas of the county for reasons that include: natural disasters such as a hurricane, fire, or flood; man-made incidents, rail, or highway accidents; or technological disasters such as a hazardous material release.

Medically fragile registration is a voluntary program that provides evacuation assistance and sheltering to residents during such times. Transportation assistance can be provided for individuals in an ordered evacuation area who may not have a means of transport to a shelter, and for those requiring health or medical considerations to the Medically Fragile Shelter.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

CARTERET COUNTY RESIDENTS:

• Requiring transportation to and from a designated emergency shelter;
• Requiring, within the limits of services provided, assistance with mobility, oxygen, routine medication administration, routine health monitoring, etc.

Proper registration requires that registration forms be filled out completely. Forms that are not filled out completely will be returned. Older versions of this form and forms from other programs do not contain the required registration data and will not be accepted.

Residents requiring greater levels of assistance than can be provided by this service such as a hospital bed, hemodialysis, life support equipment, IV chemotherapy, full ventilator, etc. are advised to make alternative plans with the assistance of a physician or health care professional.
